ZAG Heartbeats donates $10, 000 to support heroic grassroots campaign - Vancouver for Nepal
When you’re being asked to help organize your boss’ epic birthday party for 200 people – what do you do?
Throw the best damn birthday party in the city of course! And, who would have thought that this birthday party would have led to one of the most meaningful moments of my life?
Steve Curtis, the CEO and Founder of ZAG Group Inc. is known for his inclusive celebrations in Vancouver with a charitable component. This time, one of our guests, was a local activist, artist and filmmaker, Shenpenn Khymsar, who made a speech about his heroic grassroots campaign known as ‘Vancouver for Nepal.’
His story is remarkable, coming to Canada as a refugee, so he felt personally compelled to go back and rebuild communities post-earthquake devastation, especially because less than 10% of the worldwide financial aid being donated to Nepal is actually making it to the people. Here was a team who could actually create an impact. Less than a week later, his team was leaving to offer the villages of Nepal fresh water, food, and emotional support through storytelling, music and giving as many hugs as they can.
The next day Steve invited Shenpenn to introduce himself to our ZAG Heartbeats committee, and share his personal mission to supply and distribute trucks with lentils and rice, as well as set up therapy camps for children. We felt so moved by the actions of this local activist that we decided to bring ZAG’s total donation to $10,000 the same day. This donation helped Shenpenn to reach his total goal of fundraising $25, 000.
As I had the honour of presenting the cheque to Shenpenn, I also had the privilege of receiving, on behalf of the Heartbeats committee, a blessed Khata which is made of silk and is a token of gratitude and respect. As Shenpenn’s mother placed the Khata around my neck, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude!
Giving has always been engrained in ZAG’s DNA, yet this is a story for all of us to experience and demonstrate how many hearts can actually be touched, when corporate giving is infused with purpose, benevolence and ingenuity.
Shenpenn and his team “Vancouver for Nepal” have now been in Nepal a little over a week, and their updates are inspiring!

$1.50 provides a meal for a child, so a little goes a long way.
Please ‘like’ and ‘share’ the posts so we can inspire more donations and send him back in September with even more resources to impact change. Your regular participation really supports the visibility and efforts on social media and beyond. This is something that we can definitely be proud of as an organization!
